As a mentor, I use different modalities to help my clients move forward. I often refer to them as linear and non-linear learning and use them individually or together depending on preference and appropriateness
Linear Learning
Linear learners need a step-by-step exposition of the topic. They need a specific, orderly flow of information, or they lose their focus. They prefer to concentrate on a single task at a time, though they can multi-task if the tasks are put in an orderly sequence.
The special features of linear learners include:
- are analytical by nature.
- compare and contrast facts to understand them.
- are usually more verbally oriented.
- are usually, left-brain learners.
- need structure and logical progression.
- relate to written materials with a traditional outline format.
- dislike surprises such as pop quizzes, spot role-plays, etc.
Examples of using linear learning in our sessions:
- Creating a business system
- Building an email marketing strategy
- Identifying a marketing plan
- Launching a new product or online store

Non-linear learning
Learning that has been designed to ensure students can shape their learning through self-organization and self-discovery and creation. Each learner receives or chooses a personalized learning experience that accommodates different abilities, initial knowledge base, and learning styles along with different goals and visions.
The special features of non-linear learners include:
- Random starting point
- Conceptual, creative and thought-provoking
- Rely on feelings, vision and passion
- No form, system or schedule
- Dialoguing, experimentation, processing
- Building incrementally
- Abstract
- Navigating in any direction (forward, backward, wide, deep)
- Experiential, fluidity
- No accountability
Examples of using non-linear learning in our sessions:
- Identifying your life purpose and passion
- Allowing the natural unfolding of who you are

Ontology
Ontology: The study of the nature of being/beingness and existence.
Shareable and reusable knowledge across a domain. The ability to describe relationships and their high interconnectedness, making them the basis for modeling high-quality, linked and coherent data.
Evaluation of ourselves and how we fit together in the broader world.
Examples of using the study of being in our sessions:
- Awareness of behaviors
- Learning who you are and aren’t
- Redefining or reinventing yourself
