Day 3: Tags: Demystifying the YouTube Lingo
#YouTubeTags: What They Are and Why They Matter
Tags are an essential, but often misunderstood, element of YouTube optimization. They’re keywords that categorize your video, making it easier for viewers to discover it through search. Here’s a breakdown of YouTube tags and how to use them effectively:
YouTube Tip of the Day: Use a mix of relevant, high-volume, and medium-competition tags to optimize discovery.
Understanding YouTube Tags:
- Tags are like labels that categorize your video content.
- They help viewers searching for specific topics find your video.
- YouTube allows up to 500 characters for tags, but using all of them isn’t always best.
Crafting Effective Tags:
- Research is Key: Use relevant keywords people might search for (see below about my favorite tool TUBEBUDDY for selecting the best keywords)
- Mix it Up: Include a variety of tags with high search volume, medium competition, and some long-tail keywords (more specific phrases).
- Stay True to Your Content: Don’t stuff tags that are irrelevant to your video. While you may want your name or a guests name as a tag, remember that other people may not be searching for you or them. What are they searching for is in relationship to your content. Are you talking about wellness? Then add tags about what they are searching for about wellness. example: How to recover after surgery, Best foods for inflammation, whatever your content covers, turn it into a question and use it as a tag. Yes you can use multiple word tags. Also, big tip, use your entire title as a tag and place it in the first tag position. (we will talk about how to optimize your SEO later)
- Utilize YouTube’s Suggestions: Leverage YouTube’s suggested tags when creating your own list. I still use TUBEBUDDY because it ROCKS when it comes to tagging. See below.
Remember: Strategic use of tags can significantly improve your video’s discoverability.
Key Takeaways:
- Tags are crucial for helping viewers find your videos through search.
- Use a mix of relevant, high-volume, and medium-competition tags.
- Conduct keyword research to identify relevant tags.
- Don’t stuff irrelevant tags; prioritize accuracy and relevance.

I don’t have the video equipment for content creation on Youtube. But who knows? Maybe someday. And these are good suggestions about tagging.
Fran says
Alice, you only need a cell phone to become a content creator. The rest is nice but not mandatory. Don’t let that be what stops you.
Alice Gerard says
thank you. That’s good to know!
