Mastering Descriptions – The Untold Story
Beyond the Title: The Power of Descriptions
Welcome back to 31 Days of YouTube Optimization Tips to boost your channel results.
Your video description is like a mini promotion, enticing viewers to click and watch. It’s also a valuable tool for search engines to understand your video’s content so that they can help your channel by exposing it to potential fans of your topic. Here’s how to craft compelling descriptions that inform, engage, and optimize your videos for discovery:
YouTube Tip of the Day: Keep your descriptions concise and informative, ideally under 1,000 characters.
Crafting Captivating Descriptions:
1. Hook ‘Em Early:
Include a strong sentence that grabs attention and summarizes the video’s content.
2. Keyword Magic:
Include relevant keywords people might search for to improve search ranking
3. The Call to Action:
Encourage viewers to like, comment, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to stay engaged with your channel. Your call to action (CTA) can also be a link to another related video to the one they just watched or a link to your digital products, services or website.
4. Chapters –
Timestamps make for Easy Navigation: add chapters to your description for longer videos, allowing viewers to jump to specific sections. For chapters to ‘count’ you’ll need to add at least 3 and they must be at least 10 seconds apart. (see Day 5 for more on Chapters)
5. Title Integration:
Include the title of your video within the first few sentences to reinforce the topic and improve SEO. Your title should optimially show up before the option to click the ‘more’ button in your description.
6. Video Description:
Provide a concise description of the video content, giving viewers a clear idea of what to expect, yet leaving enough to the imagination so they will want to watch the video to learn more.
7. Links
Include relevant links to your website, social media, or other videos within the description.
8. Attributions and Credits:
Acknowledge any collaborators, music, or resources used in your video, including guest appearances.
9. Affiliate Links and Disclaimers:
Add any affiliate links, ensuring you include a clear affiliate disclaimer to comply with guidelines.
10. Contact Information:
Include ways for viewers to contact you, such as an email address or links to social media profiles.
11. Tags and Categories:
Add relevant tags and choose the appropriate category for your video to improve its discoverability.

Today I am posting about playlists. You may or may not know #7 which blows peoples minds when they find out. It’s one of my favorite tips!

I know nothing about creating a YouTube presence. The Description information is akin to a post description on a website. YouTube is one of my main sources for education and entertainment. A YouTuber using relevant descriptions is a great way for me to find exactly what I’m looking for. If I can’t find a video or channel with terms I would use to search, I don’t know that channel is even there. By creators using your guide, I and other viewers can find the content.
